Octocade is a party-game website. This policy explains what happens to information when you use it.
No accounts
You do not create an account. You type a name to play; it is shown on the TV and other players' screens during the game and is not stored by us.
What stays on your device
Your browser remembers a random player ID (so you return to your spot if you reload), your last name used, your language choice, and, on the TV, the last game played and the best scores. This is kept in your browser's local storage, not sent to us, and you can clear it in your browser settings.
How the devices connect
Phones connect directly to the TV ("peer-to-peer"). To set up that connection, a connection service (PeerJS) briefly introduces the devices to each other. As with any internet connection, the devices in a game and that service can see each other's IP addresses. Button presses go straight from the phone to the TV; they do not pass through our servers.
Analytics
If you agree, we use Google Analytics to count visits and understand how the games are used (for example how many players join and how long rounds last). It uses cookies or similar identifiers. If you decline, analytics cookies are not used.
Anonymous play counts
The TV page reports simple totals about its own game session to our site: the four-digit game code, how many players joined, which games were played and for how long, and whether connections had trouble. Our server also notes the browser's name and version, which every browser sends with every request. It also notes the country the request came from, as two letters (for example "IL"). That country is worked out from the IP address by the network that delivers our site; the IP address itself is not stored. A phone reports nothing unless joining a game went wrong; then it sends the game code and one word saying how it went wrong (for example "could not connect"), and our server adds one to that day's count of such failures for that game code. The links on our social profiles (octocade.com/ig, /yt and /tt) lead to the home page, and our server adds one to that day's count of visits through that link. These reports and counts use no cookies, contain no names, player IDs or IP addresses, and cannot be linked to a person or to an earlier visit.
Messages you send us
The "Having issues?" form sends us what you write and, only if you choose to give it, your email address, which we use only to answer you. Along with the message we receive the kind of device you use (for example "Android, browser 140") and, if you opened the form from a game, that game's four-digit code, so we can find its connection log. We do not store your IP address with the message. Messages are deleted after 90 days. To have one removed sooner, write to the address above.
Videos
The "How to play" page shows a video that is hosted by YouTube, a Google service. When that page loads, your browser connects to YouTube to fetch the player, so YouTube receives your IP address and details of your browser, as any site you visit does. We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, in which YouTube says it does not use cookies to track your viewing unless you play the video. What YouTube does with this information is described in the Google Privacy Policy.
Advertising
Octocade may show ads from Google on the phones' join, lobby and between-round screens. Google and its partners may use cookies to show and measure ads, and, where you consent, to personalise them. You can learn more at How Google uses information from sites that use its services and change ad personalisation at Google Ad Settings.
Children
Octocade is made for families and groups of all ages and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
